Beyoncé stands tall in the face of a terrible breakup and pulls no punches against her cheating husband on “SORRY.”
After its release as a part of Beyoncé’s 2016 album LEMONADE, “SORRY” quickly became one of the most discussed tracks of latest piece de resistance. It’s Beyoncé’s essence encapsulated into one masterful, unapologetic track.
One cannot talk about “SORRY” without mulling over the last two lines of the track. Twice, Beyoncé intones, “He better call Becky with the good hair.”
Who is ‘he?’ Who is ‘Becky?’
The Internet lit up with speculation. The common agreement is that ‘he’ refers to Beyoncé’s husband, Jay Z, and a spell of infidelity that Beyoncé had to deal with. ‘Becky,’ on the other hand, is a complete unknown. So far, Beyoncé hasn’t addressed all the speculation, and it’s likely that she never will. After all, it makes the track more intriguing.
Diana “Wynter” Gordon, credited with part of the writing on “SORRY,” spoke to EW last year about this rampant speculation. Nonchalantly, Gordon dismissed all of the theories, even going so far as to say that Beyoncé never expected that line to elicit such a frenetic response.
Having addressed “Becky with the good hair,” the rest of the track could aptly be described as a catchy anthem for female empowerment. Despite going through such a turbulent time in her life because of her man’s unfaithfulness, Bey isn’t even thinking about him.
She’s her own woman who has to remain focused on her ordeals, while he desperately tries to get her back. At one point, Beyoncé describes how she’s completely ignoring him and instead opting to have fun at the club with her girl friends.
Beyoncé ends the track with an anecdote about it being late at night and her spouse not being home yet. It’s then that she knows he’s not being loyal to her. As a result, she regrets ever having married him while making a connection to her 2008 mega-hit “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” (“Today I regret the night I put that ring on”).
She leaves him a note and leaves with their daughter (adding to the speculation that the infidel was Jay Z and that Bey is leaving with Blue Ivy), hoping that her man will eventually grow up.
