Future and André 3000 collaborate to discuss gold diggers in “Benz Friends (Watchutola).”
The topic of greedy women has been recurrent in hip hop. From older tracks like Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money” in 1999, to Kanye West’s “Gold Digger (feat. Jamie Foxx)” in 2005, and then later on in 2014 with Future and André 3000, the subject matter is not repetitive for listeners.
When comparing the lyrics on “Benz Friends” to the ones on Future’s past projects, Future contradicts his outlook on money on the hook: “I told that bitch I’on’t give a fuck about a Benz, bitch / And I don’t want no bitch who need to have that kind of friendship”. That contradiction can be mainly seen when the artist bragged about his riches and lavage lifestyle in “Covered N Money,” which appears on the same album as “Benz Friends.”
These cars don’t mean shit, these hoes don’t mean shit
These clothes don’t mean shit, these shows don’t mean shit
The first verses by Future were amazing. He delivered the message well and made the listener want to keep listening with amusing lyrics about “gold diggers.”
Bitch, you better cut it, shawty, I’m ’bout to cut you off
Oh, you greedy in Tahiti, I just seen your flaw
[…] Whatchu tired of?
Aye, see how she react when you’re no longer in your Beemer
Then she find out that the Bentley wasn’t really rented
André 3000 carries on the energy by rapping about his boredom towards all the wealth, leading listeners to wonder: “Is this really how it feels at the end of it all?”
The Atlanta artist diverged a little from the topic but stayed consistent for the most part. He also talked about his refusal to conform to his girl’s demands with the lines, “Til’ then, I will ride my fuckin’ bike, or walk.”
Affection is so convenient when ballin’
Correction: these hoes don’t mean it when fallin’
I guess that’s why Lois can’t be with Clark Kent
Fly on a nigga back while he Superman
But if I’m in a wheelchair, you still there?
Overall, both of the artist’s verses and flow were extremely impressive. It also showed the listeners how well their combination turned out despite having completely different styles. For those who have gone through a “gold digging” situation or are simply mad at a girl, “Benz Friends (Watchutola)” helps relieve the animosity.
