With today being International Women’s Day, it’d be only right to take a look at 2Pac’s “Keep Ya Head Up,” one of the best hip hop songs ever written for women.
In the song’s first verse, 2Pac discusses the hardships women have to endure. He mentions gender inequality and domestic and physical abuse. 2Pac also empathizes with women by taking a stand for those who need welfare aid and work hard to sustain their families.
In the second and third verses, 2Pac thanks his mother for working so hard when she was raising him to make sure he grew up principled.
And I realize Momma really paid the price
She nearly gave her life to raise me right
The New York rapper ends the song by talking about how the system is set up to not let the black community prosper.
The highlight of “Keep Ya Head Up” is the lyrics. They were well-thought-out, with each line maintaining a logical order in terms of topic. The melody was also great and appropriate for the subject matter.
“Keep Ya Head Up” is a song all men should hear because of its beautiful message. It’s noticeable 2Pac was really standing up for a matter he strongly believed could not be overlooked.
Here are some other lyrics taking a stand for women
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it’s time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don’t we’ll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies that make the babies
And since a man can’t make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up?
I know you’re fed up, ladies, but keep your head up
A special mention goes out to all the hard-working, kind women who make up our society.
