Song of the Day: March 5, 2017

Solange released “Mad” in 2016 as part of her album, A Seat at the Table.

She discusses her pursuit towards self-empowerment, the harsh realities of the African-American community, grief, and healing.

In the song, Solange and Lil Wayne sing about pessimism and how they refuse to conform with the struggles of black culture, having every right to be mad.

Weezy’s lyrics about attempting suicide, his time in prison, and escaping from his problems through drug abuse were also very shocking to this listener.

The rhythm of the drums with the piano syncing perfectly was beautiful to hear. Solange’s hook is one of the best things about the track. It was also amazing to see Lil Wayne’s versatility, with the New Orleans rapper having no trouble adapting to the soul beat.
